BMC Pulmonary Rehabilitation
The BMC Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program can help people with lung problems, such as asthma, bronchitis and emphysema, improve their overall condition. Our healthcare professionals work with patients to design individualized exercise programs to meet their particular respiratory needs. During all exercise sessions, the patient's blood pressure, oxygen and pulse are monitored to ensure the best possible performance for each individual.
The program has three key components:
Exercise
People with breathing problems often avoid activities that leave them short of breath. Unfortunately, lack of exercise may exacerbate their breathing problems, as their physical fitness gradually deteriorates. The exercise component of pulmonary rehabilitation counteracts this loss of fitness through breathing retraining, by increasing aerobic tolerance for exercise and improving muscle endurance, flexibility, strength, and self-confidence.
Education
The educational segment of the rehabilitation consists of teaching patients to manage their pulmonary health and well-being. Many topics are covered, such as:
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Nutrition
- Medications
- Allergies
- Breathing Retraining
- Pursed Lip Breathing
- Inhaler Techniques
- LVRS Preparation
- Home Exercise
- Inspiratory Muscle Training
- Travel with Oxygen
- Depression
- Relaxation
- Stress Reduction
- Living Wills and Proxy
- Energy Conservation
Support
The goal is to help every patient achieve the highest possible level of independent function. With this in mind, BMC's Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is devoted to supporting and assisting each patient throughout the entire rehabilitation process.
