BMC Pastoral Care

"We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience." (Pierre Teilhard de Chardin)

The above is, we believe, true for every person who comes into our hospital, emergency room or specialized treatment centers. It is also true for every person who works here at Berkshire Medical Center.

Another, perhaps less exclusive way of saying this might go something like this: Human beings are part mind, part body and part spirit and the three cannot be separated. Each affects the other. Therefore, if one is in trouble, they all are in trouble and must all be treated. Not individually, but as a whole. This is the reason Berkshire Medical Center has created and supports its Pastoral Care Department.

BMC Pastoral Care Staff and Services
The BMC Pastoral Care Department is currently staffed by two chaplains: The Rev. Art Kaufman and Father Adolf Busobozi. Rev. Kaufman serves as Pastoral Care Liaison and Protestant Chaplain and Father Adolf serves as our Catholic Chaplain. We also have several Protestant and Catholic volunteers who are trained to visit with our patients.

Our two chaplains serve our patients and their families and friends, and they serve as pastors to our staff. They act as liaisons for local clergy and as BMC's religious community public relations persons.

Our Pastoral Care Department is also willing and available to plan and conduct seminars and workshops on topics such as patient/resident visitation, end of life care, death and dying, the grieving process, and bio-medical issues.

The two staff chaplains, along with The Rev. Steve Perry, provide The Blessing of the Hands to nurses, doctors and other staff on each floor on a quarterly basis.

Both chaplains are in the hospital every morning during the week and are also on-call.
