Psychiatric Emergency Services
Berkshire Medical Center provides a 24-hour Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Emergency Screening Service in the BMC Emergency Department. The service has a distinct office with three private assessment rooms and a dedicated waiting room. The service is staffed day and night by fully trained crisis clinicians affiliated with the Brien Center clinical collaboration, psychiatric nurses, and other BMC clinicians.
The assessment team works closely with physicians and registered nurses from the Emergency Department to assure proper screening and treatment of patients. The screening service has a 24-hour psychiatrist for phone consultation, and if needed, in-person assessments. The team has the ability to admit patients to Berkshire Medical Center's inpatient psychiatric or substance abuse units or to other facilities, or can implement follow-up plans including available crisis stabilization units, the Partial Hospitalization program, crisis team follow-up, or a variety of outpatient treatment options.
