Berkshire Medical Center's General Practice Residency in Dentistry is accredited by the American Dental Association until 2008 with no reporting requirements. The program offers three PGY1 positions and is approved for one PGY2 position. Program graduates receive a certificate upon completion.
The resident will have a wide exposure in all phases of dentistry as well as being integrated into the environment of a teaching hospital with a large medical resident program and affiliations with the University of Massachusetts Medical School, University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. There is an excellent opportunity to communicate with residents and students of other disciplines and to gain knowledge which cannot be obtained in any other way.
The Dental faculty includes generalists and specialists knowledgeable in all aspects of dentistry who are committed teachers and mentors.
Following the standards of the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation, residents complete rotations in medicine and anesthesia. Following an orientation to the department, the residents cover the Emergency Department on an on-call basis, providing a valuable community service as well as providing the opportunity to observe and participate in the care of a variety of medical and surgical problems. Berkshire Medical Center is a Level II Trauma Center serving a large geographic area. The program also involves the residents in a number of community service programs.
The BMC Dental Clinic has four fully equipped operatories, a Panorex unit, and provides the opportunity to use innovative techniques such as rotary endodontic instrumentation. Clinic staff consists of three certified dental assistants, a clinic coordinator and receptionist. Operating room cases are done with specialists in pediatric dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, as well as general practitioners with operating room privileges.
Berkshire Medical Center provides the sophisticated care of a teaching institution in the warm and friendly atmosphere of a community hospital.
